A Fringe visit: choose the event before choosing the route

Different performance formats need different plans. Read the event page first.

The programme is not one building

The recovered August 2003 Old City text described performances spread across theatres, galleries and unconventional spaces. FringeArts’ current official programme is the source for today’s dates and venues. The earlier guide’s sixteen-day duration and old website address are not used as present-day booking instructions.

Identify the format

Before booking, establish whether the event is seated, standing, mobile, participatory or online, if the description specifies it. Then check the actual venue and entrance. An organiser’s headquarters, a ticket office and the performance location may be different places. If the format or access information is unclear, ask the organiser before treating it as suitable for your visit.

Compare two options honestly

Make a row for each event: title / date and time / location / duration / access information / unresolved question. Compare the rows, not just the promotional image. A programme with a shorter running time can still require more travel or earlier arrival. Keep the unresolved column instead of filling it with assumptions.

A worked example without invented shows

Option A is an imagined seated 60-minute event in a confirmed venue; option B is an imagined moving 45-minute event whose route is not yet described. If seating or step-free access matters, A may be easier to plan, but only after checking its entrance and services. B needs a specific organiser response before it becomes a workable choice. Neither example is a current Fringe production.

One event can be enough

Choose one confirmed performance and a compact nearby stop whose opening arrangements you have checked. Put the fixed performance first in your schedule, then leave a buffer. Read participation and photography rules at the event; buying a ticket does not grant permission to record performers or other audience members.

Keep this three-part record

  1. 01Format

Read how the audience participates and whether seating is specified.

  2. 02Venue

Use the event location, not an assumed headquarters.

  3. 03Timing

Include arrival, duration and travel between confirmed stops.
