VISITOR PRACTICE
An Old City art visit on a rainy day
Shorten the outdoor route and give one exhibition more attention.
Do less, see more
Choose two confirmed indoor stops rather than a long circuit. Leave room to dry off and do not bring wet umbrellas close to artwork. Ask where bags and umbrellas can be placed; storage arrangements differ by venue.
Choose an observation task
Use the five-minute painting exercise or compare two wood objects. A focused task makes a shorter visit satisfying. You do not need to compensate for bad weather by trying to enter every gallery.
Check the practical details
Confirm opening arrangements, toilets, seating and the route between entrances. A schematic cannot tell you where pavement works or sheltered waiting space will be. Allow extra time for crossings and slippery surfaces.
A workable outline
Check the Museum for Art in Wood’s programme, then a nearby source-linked gallery. Spend longer at the first stop if the weather worsens. Keep a break separate from exhibition rooms; ask the venue before bringing food or drink inside.
